Powerful Beyond Measure

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” Marianne Williamson

This year I hope we will accept our light and our greatness and allow our spirits to guide us. I pray that in 2011 all those promises we made to ourselves and to others, loudly or quietly we will move to make them a reality. I know a lot of people who have wished to build a school, sponsor a child or assist someone with something they really need and I also know people who have promised themselves to live healthier lives, to go back to school, to start a business, to spend more time with family all of them have today to start on that journey and not worry about finishing tomorrow; but I do hope they start and not worry too much about perfection like I have been. Perfection is the enemy of progress and who defines perfection. Like Neale D Walsch said we should all redefine perfection to mean a job finished!

What Motivates You -Drives You?

I have come to realise that what drives me are things that motivate me mentally and spiritually.  I am a spirit person and believe that if the spirit is strong, if the willpower is there you have half the attitude you need to get the job done.  Other times it is something so minute so simple so humble.  In 2009 for the International Women’s Day I was invited to give a little talk to celebrate the Zimbabwe Women Human Rights Defenders.  I felt so honoured to do this as I applaud what these women do not just for the country each day but for me too through their work and just being able to celebrate them with other people was such a pleasant thing for me to be a part of.  We then marched from the Central Bank in Dame Street up O’Connell Street down Parnell Street heading for the Phoenix Park.

The Touch That Nourishes
I was walking with a friend who works for Amnesty and her son who is seven.  He walked the whole journey asking us questions about why we were walking, where Zimbabwe was and other questions on things he didn’t understand.  He never once complained that the journey was too long, I was, that it was too cold, I did, or that he wanted to be lifted, well no-one could have managed that task.  Observing him walking and talking I realised something, I have a hero besides me.  This boy is only seven but he gets what celebrating someone and honouring their hard works is all about.  It’s about walking a distance in their shoes without complaining, but digesting on what you know of the people, thinking of them and respecting them for all their effort for that one day without complaining.  I then stopped complaining and realised that for sure their lives were hard.  These were mothers, sisters, daughters, aunts, grandmothers, nieces who had so much they could do with their time and yet daily they walked for Zimbabwe, for me.  So I this young boy whose name I wish I could mention and his photo I could show (if only his mom had not taken him on holidays for a month before phoning me back!!) is one of the people that motivates me and is driving me to get off my back side and commit to the things that I hold dear and value.  I have committed to doing more for myself, for my daughter, my family, my neighbours, my country and the world.  So I would like to call on other women like me and young girls too to meet me once in a while so we can walk a distance in honour of just one woman we know who is working for a better world in their corner of the world dares to dream of a better tomorrow.

Execute!!

        Phineas and Ferb Executing!! (http://hubpages.com)
"Ideation without execution is nothing but a delusion" said Robin Sharma. I agree with him a 100%. On Saturday I was invited to be part of a debate team talking on the theme "The Impact of Western Aid to Africa". Now that's a very contentious issue. I was on the team that said it's been positive and of course I know what you are all thinking, I MUST BE MAD!! I don't blame you, I thought the same too but it's easy to blame things that fail us than to accept that we have failed ourselves. I am not saying the situation has been great for the African continent but I am not saying it's been bad either. I am saying we both play a big part in how aid is and has has always been managed since it's conception. No one is forced to receive aid but the truth of the matter is most of us do without thinking. We have become used to getting and not giving. Especially our leaders. They don't realise by always accepting free gifts they are taking the power away

Giving

The gift to give is often accompanied by the feeling of jubilation and joy like none ever experienced before.  It is a feeling that only comes from just being able to give without thinking twice about it or happened to pull off next to a miracle on behalf of the recipient.
I once read a book called Riding the Dragons (I can’t remember the author unfortunately) and the author wrote about a Priest who used to make sandwiches and give them out to the less fortunate.  It was something he did every day until one day someone noticed, the news caught the attention of the media and he ended up as some sort of mini celebrity.  On reading about this some people started sending the Priest cheques and money for him to make more sandwiches to give to the homeless and those without.  The Priest sent back all the cheques with a simple message saying along the lines of “Use the money yourself to give out food to those less privileged”.
The lesson he wanted to teach was a simple one.  Give because you want to.  Give because you feel it in you to give.  Don’t give because you want someone to say “Thank you” or to be noticed.  If someone refuses your gift you shouldn’t feel rejected because the intention of giving should never be to seek a reaction from the receiver.  It should never be for the other person to accept.  Give freely and if your gift is turned down accept that as graciously as you do when someone accepts your offer.  It should be with grace.  When we seek personal glory from giving we truly lose the meaning of giving.  I know I used the analogy of the sandwiches but this applies to all things we give including money, accommodation, a lift and even advice.
Advice among money, clothes and food causes contention amongst people.  Mostly because if one is less privileged they may be made to feel more so depending on the way the giver behaves towards them.  Sometimes givers can be very patronising.  They make it hard to say no to their gifts...
